Luke 8

The seed is the Word of God.

This is a story about a farmer who did sow seed. Makes me think of how we sow seed regularly.. and what kind of seed we scatter, and how frivolous we are when dropping seed. Not really having a serious purpose as the seed is sowed… lets read! It is the parable of the Sower. Jesus is proclaiming and teaching us about His kingdom.

Jesus said (vs 5) “A farmer went out to sow his seed. He was scattering his seed and some fell along the path; it was trampled on. The birds ate some of the seed! (vs 6) Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up the plants withered because they had no moisture! The other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants! (vs 8) The other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than what was sown!”

When he said this, he called out: “whoever has ears to hear, let them hear!”

When they asked him what this meant (vs 10) Jesus said, ‘the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you’ but I speak in parables, so that – “through seeing, they may not see; through hearing, they may not understand.”

.. ..And “this is the meaning of the parable: the seed is the Word of God”.

Jesus goes on to explain!

“Those along the path are the ones who hear, and the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.” (vs 13) And “those on rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for awhile, but in the time of testing they fall away. (vs 14) The seed that fell among the thorns stands for those who hear it – but as they go away.. they are choked by life’s worries, riches, and pleasures, and they do not mature. (vs 15) But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop!”

What does it mean to persevere? It means to apply persistence (continuing) and keep on going/ pressing on even while enduring obstacles. We know the word steadfast comes up again, with the word perseverance and it about being able to stay the course.

Stay put in your faith journey and use courage as you are maintaining a course of action! Even if it seems like your course has such difficulty, and success doesn’t seem possible. We are pursuing a good fight, and proceeding until the very end. Jesus wants you to press on, pursuing His kingdom and live while standing firm!

Faith, courage and generosity is always necessary to succeed, and it begins with humility and inner strength! I receive as I hope in the Lord.

2 Corinthians 9:6- says whoever sows sparingly reaps sparingly, and whomever sows generously reaps generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, and not reluctantly or under compulsion. For the Lord loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, you will have all that you need and abound in every good work. (vs 9) It is written: ” they have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever” …
